Trainings in oil shale laboratories
Trainings suit for gymnasium pupils and are carried out in the study laboratory of Oil Shale Competence Center (excluding Laboratory work no 6).
Laboratory work 1: Oil yield determination in oil shale retorting
Milled solid fuel (oil shale, wood, peat, coal etc) is heated under 520°C without air access in the Fischer's retort. As a result of analysis the yield of fuel oil is determined. Duration: 3 hours
Laboratory work 2: Solid fuels ash content and humidity determination
Milled solid fuel is heated under 865°C in muffle furnace and at 105-110°C in drying cabinet up to residue mass. As a result of analysis ash and moisture content are determined on the basis of masses difference. Duration: 2.5 hours
Laboratory work 3: Carbonates hydrogen dioxide content determination
Solid fuel inorganic hydrogen content is determined during analysis (calcination with acid, titration). Duration: 2 hours
Laboratory work 4: Solid fuels calorific values determination
When combusting 1 kg of fuel the amount of power is determined by bomb-calorimeter. Comparison of different solid fuels calorific values. Duration: 1 hour
Laboratory work 5: Differential distillation
Shale oil fractions detachment by the process of distillation (gasoline, diesel, mazut). Determination of the obtained fractions density. Duration: 1,5 hours
Laboratory work 6 *: Water and oil shale industry. Water analyses.
Discussion about water and oil shale industry interconnections and water properties. Analysis of water samples taken from different places and origin finding out. Duration: 1,5 hours
* - laboratory works can be also conducted in a classroom, neither equipment nor laboratory rooms are required.
STUDY TRIP: Oil shale industry phenomena in Virumaa environment
Study trip has the following stopping places: Kiviõli old semicoke spoil heap, Erra river and Uhaku karst area, Püssi ash dump, Kukruse spoil heap, Kukruse manor oil shale mining site, Ahtme Power Plant ash plateau, Kalina bog peat openpit and Viru underground mine spoil heaps. Duration: max 4 hours
