Leading timber engineers from around the world gather in Tallinn
On August 13-16, the International Network on Timber Engineering Research (INTER) forum – INTER 2018 – brings the world's leading timber experts to Tallinn.
The purpose of the 51st conference is to present and discuss the scientific findings of the world's researchers that are the basis for the methods of calculating wooden structures used in various standards. In Europe, the standard is Eurocode 5. The focus of this year's forum is on studies on joints in timber structures.
Professor Alar Just from TTÜ Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, believes that the high-level forum in TTÜ is symbolic, as research on wooden structures has had long traditions in the university.
"The forum in a live discussion format is an effective way of publishing research results, as there is no long process of peer review," explains Just. "The results are also reliable and high-quality, as all experts may have their say directly to the author and receive answers directly from them. All questions and answers will be published later with the articles. This is a rather rare and grateful practice," he added.
In addition to the scientific program, participants from 16 countries can visit Tallinn Old Town, Viru Bug and Seaplane Harbour. The places to visit include also the Harmet OÜ Modular House Factory near Keila and the Tondiraba Ice Hall, where is Estonia's one of the most significant wood construction solutions by Peetri Puit OÜ, a company located in southern Estonia.
The head of INTER network for the past three decades has been Professor Hans Blass from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. At the end of the Tallinn meeting, the position will be assumed by Philipp Dietsch of Munich Technical University.
The INTER 2018 forum will be held at the Assembly Hall of Tallinn University of Technology.
The conference will be organized by the research group of structural engineering at Tallinn University of Technology, Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture. The event is sponsored by Harmet OÜ.
